A BRIEF HISTORY OF CRESWICK GARDEN CLUB’S ANNUAL FLOWER SHOWS
When we retired to Creswick in December 1996, there was a need expressed for a Garden Club in the town and someone who knew how to run a Flower show! A Meeting was called by the Neighbourhood House, to which about seventeen people attended. Thoughts and ideas were expressed and my husband and I, who had experience with Box Hill Horticultural Society and the brilliant Flower Shows that they ran, were well experienced in such events. Not just one hall at Box Hill, but three, full of high quality exhibits and floral art. Way back then, there were still many big properties with lovely gardens in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Crowds would be waiting at the door for the shows to open. The Shows (four per year) were eagerly awaited and quite spectacular – sadly, no more.
With the formation of the Creswick Garden Club in March 1998, the first attempt at staging a show of the Modern era was in 1999 and what an outstanding success it was. The R.S.L. Hall was filled to over-flowing, such was the response from the Public. What joy showed in the exhibitor’s faces, when they saw what they had created. Word went round that town –“Don’t miss seeing the Flower Show!” A bigger Hall was needed for the next year – off to the Town Hall. Way back then, a ‘Spring Fiesta’ was held in Creswick and the Garden Club became an integral part of that. We took part in the Street Parades, with members dressing up in support of the theme of the year and distributing something (usually edible) to the crowds in the street. We started holding Open Gardens which brought many people into the town. One could almost guarantee that an inch of rain would fall on the opening day, but that was never enough to dampen our spirits.
The Club continues to thrive and be an asset to the town and the pleasure of Horticulture continues to be spread. There is a high standard of interest and involvement in the Club, which continues to be maintained, with a membership that has spread over a wide area of the Central Highlands. By Val Lawrence
